China | Israel-Hamas | UN Security Council session

China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi will go to New York on November 29 to host the United Nations Security Council session on the Israel-Hamas issue, the Chinese foreign ministry said on Monday (November 27).

Officials from Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, Indonesia, Palestinian authorities and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, among others, held meetings with China’s top diplomat Wang Yi in Beijing on November 20.

Since the start of hostilities, China’s foreign ministry has repeatedly stopped short of condemning Hamas, instead calling for de-escalation and for Israel and Palestine to pursue a “two-state solution” for an independent Palestine.

Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel on October 7 which killed at least 1,400 people. Israel has since retaliated by striking Gaza from the air, imposed a siege and launched a ground assault, stirring global alarm at humanitarian conditions in the enclave.
