MEA | Qatar | Court of Appeal | Al Dahra case

The death sentences of eight Indian nationals in Qatar have been commuted. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) released a statement on Thursayd, acknowledging the verdict of the Court of Appeal of Qatar in the Dahra Global case.

The eight Indians, former personnel of the Indian Navy, were sentenced to death by a Qatari court while working with the private company Al Dahra. They were arrested in August of the previous year on charges related to alleged espionage.

According to the MEA statement, the Court of Appeal has reduced the sentences. The detailed judgment is still awaited, and the ministry is in close communication with the legal team and family members to determine the next course of action.

The Indian Ambassador to Qatar, along with other officials, was present during the Court of Appeal proceedings, standing alongside the family members. The Ministry affirmed its unwavering support, stating that it has been involved in the matter from the outset and will continue to provide all necessary consular and legal assistance.

Due to the confidential and sensitive nature of the case, the ministry refrained from making further comments at this juncture. However, it emphasized its commitment to pursuing the matter with Qatari authorities, ensuring that the interests of the Indian nationals involved are safeguarded.

The case has been closely monitored, with concerns raised about the fairness of the legal proceedings. The commutation of the death sentences brings a sense of relief, although the complete details of the Court of Appeal’s decision are yet to be disclosed.
