Cabinet approves MoU with Kenya on digital solutions at population scale

In a significant move towards fostering global digital collaboration, the Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India and Kenya.

The agreement, inked on December 5, 2023, facilitates cooperation in the realm of sharing successful Digital Solutions implemented at Population Scale for Digital Transformation.

The primary objective of this MoU is to promote closer cooperation and the exchange of experiences and digital technologies-based solutions in the implementation of digital transformational initiatives in both countries. This collaboration extends beyond governmental boundaries, encompassing initiatives in the private sector as well.

The MoU is set to be in effect from the date of signature for a period of three years. Its impact is expected to enhance Government-to-Government (G2G) and Business-to-Government (B2G) bilateral cooperation in the field of Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI).

One of the key anticipated outcomes is the improvement of collaboration leading to increased employment opportunities in the field of Information Technology.

India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has been actively engaging with numerous countries and multilateral agencies to foster bilateral and multilateral cooperation in the ICT domain. This aligns with the various initiatives undertaken by the Government of India, such as Digital India, Atmanirbhar Bharat, and Make in India, aimed at transforming the nation into a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy.

India, having demonstrated leadership in implementing Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) and successfully delivering services even during the COVID-19 pandemic, has garnered interest from several countries looking to learn from its experiences.

India Stack Solutions, a set of DPIs developed and implemented by India at a population scale, play a crucial role in providing access and delivery of public services. These solutions aim to enhance connectivity, promote digital inclusion, and enable seamless access to public services, all built on open technologies and designed to foster innovative and inclusive solutions.

While the basic functionality of DPI may be similar across countries, the unique needs and challenges of each nation necessitate global cooperation.

The MoU between India and Kenya signifies a step forward in this changing paradigm, facilitating the exploration of business opportunities, sharing best practices, and attracting investments in the digital sector with the ultimate goal of enhancing mutual cooperation between the two nations.
