External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar inaugurated India’s first overseas Jan Aushadhi Kendra in Mauritius on Wednesday, marking a significant step in strengthening ties between the two nations. Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth was also present at the event.

The Jan Aushadi Kendra, a health partnership project, aims to supply cost-effective, Made-in-India medicines to enhance public healthcare and well-being in Mauritius. This initiative fulfills a promise made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier this year.

Jaishankar, who arrived in Mauritius on Tuesday for a two-day official visit, said in a post on X, “Delighted to inaugurate along with Prime Minister @KumarJugnauth the first overseas Jan Aushadi Kendra in Mauritius.”

He also inaugurated the Mediclinic project at Grand Bois village in Mauritius. Funded by Indian assistance, the project will provide secondary healthcare for approximately 16,000 people living in the area. Jaishankar highlighted India’s commitment to people-centric policies under PM Modi’s leadership and emphasized the importance of health as a priority and a right for all citizens.

“Sometimes, there can be small steps, little projects, but to the community, they can make a very big difference. In this community, for example, its entire health needs will change after this clinic comes up,” the minister said.
