India’s hopes for an Olympic medal in archery took a blow as both the men’s and women’s teams were eliminated from the Paris Olympics 2024. The men’s team, consisting of Dhiraj Bommadevara, Tarundeep Rai, and Pravin Jadhav, exited the competition after a 2-6 loss to Turkey in the quarterfinals on Monday.
The match proved challenging for the Indian archers, with Bommadevara particularly struggling to find his form. Turkey capitalized on this advantage, securing the win with scores of 57-53, 55-52, 54-55, and 58-54. The defeat marks a continuation of India’s Olympic medal drought in archery.
This setback follows the women’s team’s elimination on Sunday. The trio of Ankita Bhakat, Bhajan Kaur, and Deepika Kumari suffered a decisive 6-0 loss to the Netherlands in their quarterfinal match.
Despite the team disappointments, Indian archers will now shift their focus to individual events, hoping to salvage their Olympic campaign with personal successes.
India’s performance on Day 3 of the Olympics was mixed across other sports. In badminton, Lakshya Sen won his match, while the men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty advanced to the quarterfinals.
The shooting events saw near misses and some progress. Arjun Babuta narrowly missed a medal in the men’s 10m air rifle final, while Manu Bhaker and Sarabjot Singh reached the bronze medal match in the 10m air pistol mixed team event. Ramita Jindal finished 7th in the women’s 10m air rifle final.
In men’s hockey, a late goal by Harmanpreet Singh secured a 1-1 draw for India against Argentina.
