Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday extended greetings on the auspicious occasion of Vishu, describing the festival as a symbol of hope, happiness and positivity.
In a post on X, PM Modi said, “Have a wonderful Vishu!”
“Greetings on the auspicious occasion of Vishu! This festival is about hope and happiness. It emphasises on positivity and gratitude towards all. May the coming year be full of joy, prosperity and good health. May the year bring new opportunities, success and peace all around,” he added.
Vishu, widely associated with the Malayalam New Year, is being observed on April 15, marking the beginning of the Medam month in the Malayalam calendar. Celebrated primarily in Kerala, the festival signifies new beginnings, prosperity and optimism.
The day begins with the traditional ritual of Vishukkani, where devotees view an auspicious arrangement of items such as fruits, rice, flowers, coins and a mirror as the first sight of the day, believed to bring good fortune for the year ahead. People also wear new clothes, offer prayers, exchange Vishukkaineetam (monetary gifts), and share festive meals with family and friends.
While the official Malayalam New Year begins with the month of Chingam, Vishu is considered by many, especially in the Malabar region, as an astrological New Year, adding to its cultural importance.
Beyond its rituals, Vishu carries a deeper message of renewal, encouraging people to embrace positivity, gratitude and fresh opportunities. The festival continues to hold strong relevance in modern times, serving as a reminder to stay connected to cultural roots while looking ahead with hope and confidence.
