Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday held a roadshow in Gangtok, receiving a warm and enthusiastic welcome from residents as his convoy passed through the city ahead of key engagements in Sikkim.
In a series of posts on X, PM Modi said, “It is wonderful to be in Gangtok, Sikkim to take part in the closing ceremony of the 50th Statehood Day celebrations of this great state. The visit began with a big roadshow in the city. I thank the people for their blessings and affection.”
The Prime Minister also shared “glimpses from the very special roadshow in Gangtok,” saying that he is “looking forward to tomorrow’s programmes in Sikkim…”
PM Modi is on a two-day visit to Sikkim, marking a significant moment during the state’s 50th year of statehood celebrations. On Tuesday, he is scheduled to visit the Orchidarium, part of the Swarnajayanti Maitri Manjari Park, developed as a world-class centre to showcase the region’s rich floral and ecological heritage.
Later in the day, PM Modi will attend the closing ceremony of the Golden Jubilee celebrations at Paljor Stadium, where he will inaugurate, launch and lay the foundation stone for multiple development projects worth over ₹4,000 crore. He is also expected to address a public gathering on the occasion.
The projects span a wide range of sectors, including infrastructure, connectivity, healthcare, education, power, urban development, tourism, environment and agriculture, aimed at accelerating holistic development across the state.
In the healthcare sector, the Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone for a 100-bedded Ayurveda hospital in Yangang, Namchi district, and inaugurate a 30-bedded Integrated Sowa Rigpa Hospital at NIT Deorali, strengthening access to traditional systems of medicine.
In education, PM Modi will inaugurate several key institutions, including the permanent campus of Sikkim University at Yangang, the administrative block of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose University of Excellence, and the Helen Lepcha Medical College in Gangtok district. Additional projects include new residential schools, a model degree college, and IT-enabled infrastructure across 160 schools.
To boost connectivity, PM Modi will lay the foundation stone for two steel arch bridges over the Teesta River and inaugurate road upgrades linking Birdhang and Namchi, aimed at improving inter-district travel and facilitating movement of goods and people.
In the power sector, projects to upgrade and strengthen the transmission and distribution network in Gangtok will also be inaugurated, ensuring more reliable electricity supply.
Urban development initiatives include the inauguration of the Jan Seva Sachivalaya (Mini Secretariat), a Civil Service Officers Institute, and housing projects for urban poor and police personnel. The Prime Minister will also lay the foundation stone for a public utility centre at MG Marg.
Environmental initiatives include sewerage system rehabilitation in Singtam and pollution abatement projects for local rivers, aimed at improving sanitation and ecological sustainability.
Tourism and pilgrimage infrastructure will also receive a boost, with projects including redevelopment of the Ridge precinct in Gangtok, eco-tourism facilities, and infrastructure related to the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. A new eco-pilgrimage complex in Gyalshing district will also be launched.
Additionally, PM Modi will inaugurate the Sikkim IFFCO Processing Plant to strengthen agro-processing and farmer livelihoods, along with indoor cricket facilities in Pakyong district to promote sports development among youth.
