President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday emphasised the importance of compassion, integrity and patient-centric care in the medical profession while addressing the convocation ceremony of All India Institute of Medical Sciences Nagpur in Maharashtra.
Addressing graduating students, the President said that while technological advancements are transforming healthcare globally, the essence of medical practice must remain rooted in humanity. “No matter how advanced the technology may become, it can never take the place of compassion, integrity and a patient-centric approach,” she said.
Medicine as a service to humanity
Highlighting the noble nature of the profession, President Murmu described medicine as more than a career. She noted that doctors play a crucial role not only in treating illnesses but also in instilling hope among patients and their families.
The President emphasised that empathy and sensitivity are essential, especially in difficult situations, and called for mutual respect between patients and healthcare professionals to maintain trust.
Healthcare key to national progress
President Murmu underlined that the health of citizens is vital for nation-building, stating that a healthy population contributes significantly to the country’s overall development.
She highlighted the government’s efforts over the past decade to improve healthcare access, including the expansion of AIIMS institutions across the country, which has strengthened both medical education and treatment facilities.
AIIMS Nagpur’s growing role
Praising All India Institute of Medical Sciences Nagpur, President Murmu said the institute has, within a short span, emerged as a leading centre for medical education, research and quality healthcare.
She also appreciated its efforts to adopt new technologies and improve healthcare delivery, particularly in bridging the gap between rural and urban areas.
Embracing innovation with ethics
The President noted that the healthcare sector is undergoing rapid transformation, driven by innovations such as artificial intelligence and digital health services. She urged medical professionals to embrace these advancements while maintaining ethical values.
Encouraging young doctors to pursue lifelong learning, President Murmu said curiosity and innovation are essential for progress in medical science. She advised them to remain committed to research and continuously upgrade their skills.
Call for responsibility and service
Reiterating the high level of trust society places in doctors, President Murmu said it is their moral responsibility to prioritise patient welfare above all else. She urged the graduates to take pride in their role and serve with dedication and sensitivity.
Expressing confidence in the graduating students, the President said their contributions would not only ensure better healthcare outcomes but also support India’s vision of becoming a developed nation by the centenary of independence.
