Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav on Tuesday said that the Shekha Jheel Bird Sanctuary has been designated as a Ramsar site, taking India’s total number of internationally recognised wetlands to 99.
With this addition, Uttar Pradesh now has 12 Ramsar sites, further strengthening its position as one of the leading states in wetland conservation.
In a post on X, Yadav said the recognition would boost local livelihoods, biodiversity conservation, and water and climate security. He noted that the designation brings India closer to achieving a milestone of 100 Ramsar sites.
Highlighting the ecological significance of the sanctuary, the minister said Shekha Jheel serves as a crucial stopover along the Central Asian Flyway, supporting migratory bird species such as the Bar-headed Goose, Painted Stork, and several varieties of ducks during the winter season.
Yadav also credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for leading India’s ecosystem restoration efforts, stating that the country’s commitment to wetland conservation and protection of natural habitats has received global recognition.
He encouraged citizens and nature enthusiasts to visit the sanctuary and experience its rich biodiversity.
