India and Spain on Monday held high-level discussions to expand bilateral cooperation in astrophysics, emerging technologies and industrial research during a meeting between Union Minister Jitendra Singh and a Spanish delegation led by Eva Ortega-Paíno in New Delhi.
The meeting, held at Kartavya Bhavan, focused on strengthening collaboration in science, technology and innovation, with particular emphasis on astrophysics, artificial intelligence, biotechnology, digital transformation and industrial innovation.
The Spanish delegation also included José Moisés Martín, along with senior officials and scientists from Spain’s Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities. Officials and scientists from India’s Department of Science and Technology (DST) and associated institutions also participated in the discussions.
According to the Ministry of Science and Technology, the talks reflected the growing momentum in India-Spain scientific engagement and both countries’ shared commitment to strengthening partnerships in futuristic and technology-driven sectors.
The discussions covered a wide range of areas including circular economy, digital health, medical devices, advanced materials, biotechnology, space sciences and innovation-led industrial research.
Jitendra Singh highlighted the decade-long India-Spain partnership in industrial research and development and said bilateral scientific cooperation has steadily expanded into several cutting-edge domains.
The Minister noted that collaborative programmes between the two countries have generated productive research outcomes and commercially relevant technologies benefiting industries and innovation ecosystems on both sides.
Singh also welcomed the increasing participation of industries, startups, innovators and research institutions under the India-Spain collaboration framework, saying the partnership has opened new opportunities for technology development and innovation-driven growth.
Both sides reviewed existing cooperation mechanisms and discussed ways to strengthen institutional linkages, industry participation and researcher collaborations. The meeting also explored the possibility of expanding cooperation in astrophysics and other mega-science initiatives of mutual interest.
India and Spain further exchanged views on enhancing cooperation in biomedical sciences, oncology research, biotechnology and innovation networks, while encouraging greater collaboration among academic institutions, scientific organisations and industries.
The two countries acknowledged that bilateral cooperation in science and technology has evolved significantly over the past two decades and agreed to explore new areas aligned with emerging global scientific priorities and technological transformations.
The meeting reaffirmed the commitment of India and Spain to deepen cooperation in science, technology and innovation through stronger research, industrial and knowledge-sharing partnerships.
