Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday reviewed the progress, quality and maintenance status of 4,178 kilometres of National Highway projects in Assam during a high-level meeting held in New Delhi.
The review meeting was conducted following inputs and feedback received through media reports and social media regarding highway conditions and project execution in the state.
Union Ministers of State Ajay Tamta and Harsh Malhotra also attended the meeting, along with senior officials from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), and project contractors.
During the review, Gadkari stressed the need to speed up on-ground execution of highway works and strengthen quality monitoring mechanisms to ensure better durability and riding quality of road infrastructure across Assam.
The minister also directed officials to adopt modern construction technologies and best practices to improve long-term asset performance and maintenance standards.
Given Assam’s challenging monsoon conditions, Gadkari instructed authorities to undertake advanced monsoon preparedness measures, including the development of robust drainage systems, slope protection works, and rapid response mechanisms to minimise traffic disruptions and ensure commuter safety on key highway corridors.
