Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday congratulated Indian wrestlers for their outstanding performance at the 2026 U23 Asian Wrestling Championships held in Da Nang, Vietnam, where India registered its best-ever overall medal haul in the tournament’s history.
In a post on X, the Prime Minister said, “An outstanding performance by our wrestlers! Our Men’s Freestyle and Women’s Wrestling teams won the Team Titles at the 2026 U23 Asian Championships in Da Nang, Vietnam.”
“The Men’s Freestyle Wrestling team secured 9 medals, including 4 Golds, thus registering India’s highest-ever overall medal haul at the U23 Asian Championships history. The women wrestling contingent won 10 medals, including 6 Golds. The Greco-Roman team also recorded its highest-ever overall medal count with 8 medals. Congratulations to our wrestlers. My best wishes for the endeavours ahead,” he added.
Home Minister Amit Shah also congratulated the Indian wrestlers on their feat.
In a post on X, HM Shah said, “India shines with biggest ever medal tally at 2026 U23 Asian Championships. Congratulations to our contingent at the U23 Asian Championships for setting new standards by winning a historic 19 medals in men’s freestyle and women’s wrestling, including 10 gold medals. You have set an inspiring example for the new players to win more honors for the nation.”
India concluded its campaign with a remarkable total of 27 medals – 11 gold, seven silver and nine bronze – across freestyle, women’s wrestling and Greco-Roman categories.
The Indian men’s freestyle wrestling team emerged as champions, finishing ahead of powerhouse nations Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan in the overall standings.
The freestyle squad won nine medals, including four gold, three silver and two bronze medals. Gold medals were won by Akshay T Dhere (57kg), Vicky (97kg), Kumar Mohit (65kg) and Chandermohan (79kg).
Deepak Rathi (61kg), Punit Kumar (92kg) and Lacky (125kg) secured silver medals, while Deepak Berwal (74kg) and Mor Sachin (82kg) added bronze medals to India’s tally.
India’s women wrestlers also delivered a dominant performance, securing 10 medals, including six gold medals.
Muskan (53kg), Tapasya (57kg), Bhagyashree (62kg), Pulkit (67kg), Mansi (68kg) and Kajal (76kg) clinched gold medals in their respective categories.
Neha (59kg) and Sweety (50kg) won silver medals, while Amruta (72kg) and Ahilya (55kg) finished with bronze medals.
In the Greco-Roman category, India secured eight medals. Sumit won gold in the 63kg division, while Suraj (60kg) and Sagar Singh (67kg) claimed silver medals.
Neeraj Patel (55kg), Sachin (77kg), Rohit Bura (87kg), Rohit (97kg) and Hardeep (130kg) added bronze medals to complete India’s historic campaign.
