Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday highlighted India’s long-standing fascination with astronomy and encouraged young people to explore the field by joining astronomy clubs and visiting planetariums during their holidays.
Speaking during the 134th episode of Mann Ki Baat, PM Modi said astronomy has been deeply rooted in India’s scientific and cultural traditions for centuries.
“We Indians have always had a special fascination for astronomy. Centuries-old observatories still exist in our country. Amazing mathematical discoveries have been made here. Be it navigation, the almanac, or our festivals, all of these are related to the sky and the stars,” he said.
The Prime Minister noted that astronomy continues to inspire curiosity among people across generations and is witnessing growing interest among the country’s youth.
“Astronomy has aroused curiosity in every generation in our country. It has inspired exploration; a lot of enthusiasm is visible in today’s youth,” PM Modi said.
Astronomy Clubs Gaining Popularity Across India
Highlighting the increasing popularity of astronomy clubs, PM Modi said their activities are now visible across cities, towns, schools and public spaces throughout the country.
“You too must have noticed that astronomy clubs are becoming increasingly popular across the country. Their activities are visible from big cities to small towns, from schools to parks,” he said.
The Prime Minister cited several organisations working to promote astronomy education and public engagement.
He referred to the Bangalore Astronomical Society, which conducts observation sessions and has launched initiatives to popularise astronomy in rural areas. He also mentioned a team called “Khagol Mandal,” which has introduced an innovative 30-hour astronomy course.
Night Sky Observation Initiatives Praised
PM Modi also praised the efforts of Astro Kerala, which organises night observation camps and workshops where young participants learn to build telescopes and use star maps.
“Gazing at the stars at night is an entrancing experience in itself,” the Prime Minister said.
He further highlighted the work of the Big Bang Astronomy Club, which has organised astronomy events at locations ranging from the Gir forests to the Rann of Kutch.
The Prime Minister also mentioned Jyotirvidya Parisanstha, one of the country’s oldest astronomy institutions, which offers observation facilities, a library and a telescope lending service.
In addition, he referred to ISAAC, a nationwide student-led network that connects astronomy and astrophysics clubs across India.
PM Urges Youth to Pursue Scientific Hobbies
Emphasising the importance of hobbies and lifelong learning, PM Modi encouraged young people to dedicate time to activities that expand their knowledge and curiosity.
“It is very important to take out time for your hobby and constantly learn something new,” he said.
The Prime Minister urged students and young enthusiasts to make the most of their vacation period by exploring astronomy-related activities.
“I would urge the youth to join an astronomy club and visit a planetarium during these holidays,” PM Modi said.
