PM Modi pays tribute to Jawaharlal Nehru on his death anniversary

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday paid homage to India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on his death anniversary.

In a post on X, PM Modi said, “Paying homage to former Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on his death anniversary.”

Senior Congress leaders, including party president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, paid floral tributes to Nehru at the Shantivan memorial in New Delhi. Senior Congress leaders KC Venugopal and BK Hariprasad were also present on the occasion.

In Karnataka, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah participated in commemorative events in Bengaluru, including remembrance programmes at the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee office and near the Vidhana Soudha.

Born in Allahabad on November 14, 1889, Jawaharlal Nehru received his early education at home before travelling to England for higher studies. He studied at Harrow and later at the University of Cambridge, where he completed his studies in Natural Sciences. He subsequently qualified as a barrister from the Inner Temple in London.

After returning to India in 1912, Nehru became actively involved in the freedom movement. Following India’s independence in 1947, he became the country’s first Prime Minister and remained in office for more than 16 years until his death on May 27, 1964.

Fondly remembered as “Chacha Nehru” for his affection towards children, his birth anniversary on November 14 is celebrated every year as Children’s Day in India.
