Indian Railways has approved the ₹993-crore Arakkonam-Chengalpattu Doubling Project in Tamil Nadu, a major infrastructure initiative aimed at easing congestion on the Chennai suburban rail network and improving both passenger and freight movement across the corridor.
The 68-km doubling project under Southern Railway forms part of the important Chennai suburban circular rail network connecting Chennai Beach, Tambaram, Chengalpattu and Arakkonam. The project is expected to significantly enhance operational efficiency, reduce train delays and increase the frequency of suburban rail services.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the project would play a key role in decongesting the busy Chennai suburban network while improving punctuality and overall rail operations.
“The Arakkonam-Chengalpattu Doubling Project will strengthen both passenger and freight movement across the corridor, benefiting transportation of key commodities including cement, automobiles, food grains, iron and steel,” Vaishnaw said.
The Ministry of Railways said the existing single-line section is currently operating at high capacity utilisation, with rail traffic expected to rise further in the coming years. The doubling work is aimed at addressing future demand by improving line capacity and reducing detention time for trains.
The corridor serves several major industrial and economic hubs, including Mahindra World City, Sriperumbudur, Oragadam and Irungattukottai, which house automobile, cement and manufacturing industries. The proposed Parandur airport project near Kancheepuram is also located close to the alignment, adding to the route’s strategic significance.
The Ministry said the project is part of Indian Railways’ broader push to modernise infrastructure, expand network capacity and improve operational efficiency across key corridors.
The doubling project is expected to strengthen suburban and freight connectivity in the region while supporting industrial growth and providing faster, safer and more reliable transportation services for commuters and businesses alike.
