Centre announces relief for K’taka mango growers; Union Min Joshi thanks PM Modi, Shivraj Chouhan

The Centre has approved financial assistance for Karnataka’s mango growers under the Market Intervention Scheme (MIS), providing relief to farmers affected by falling market prices and adverse weather conditions during the current marketing season.

Under the approved package, growers of Totapuri mangoes will receive financial assistance of Rs 1,750 per quintal, covering procurement of up to 1.30 lakh metric tonnes of produce.

The announcement was made by Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Pralhad Joshi on Thursday.

Welcoming the decision, Joshi expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on behalf of Karnataka’s farming community for extending support to mango growers facing financial hardship.

According to the statement, Joshi had recently written to Chouhan, highlighting the challenges faced by mango farmers in Karnataka and seeking assistance under the Price Deficiency Payment Scheme (PDPS).

In response, the Union Agriculture Ministry approved financial relief measures for the affected growers. Chouhan communicated the decision to Joshi through an official letter detailing the Centre’s approval.

To protect the interests of mango farmers, the government has decided to implement the Price Deficiency Payment (PDP) mechanism under the Market Intervention Scheme for Totapuri mangoes during the 2026-27 marketing season in Karnataka.

Under the scheme, financial assistance of Rs 1,750 per quintal will be provided for procurement of up to 1,30,000 metric tonnes. The Centre has also issued detailed operational guidelines to the state government for implementation.

The Price Deficiency Payment scheme will remain operational for one month during the marketing season. Farmers seeking benefits will be required to sell their produce through notified Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) markets in the state.

The Karnataka government has been directed to publish a list of authorised traders dealing in Totapuri mangoes under the MIS framework. Compensation for price losses will be transferred directly to eligible farmers through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) into Aadhaar-linked bank accounts.

Karnataka is among India’s leading mango-producing states, with Totapuri mango cultivation concentrated in districts including Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Ramanagara, Dharwad, Belagavi, Vijayapura, Bagalkote, Ballari, Tumakuru, Mandya and Channarayapatna.

The relief package is expected to benefit a large number of mango growers across these regions.
