Centre approves large-scale MSP procurement of pulses and oilseeds in four states; Uttar Pradesh gets biggest share

The Centre has approved large-scale procurement of pulses and oilseeds under the Price Support Scheme (PSS) in four states – Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Haryana – to ensure farmers receive remunerative prices for their produce and are protected from distress sales.

The approvals were granted by Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan during a video conference review meeting on Thursday.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Uttar Pradesh has emerged as the largest beneficiary of the procurement drive. For the Summer 2026 season, the Centre has approved procurement of 48,298 metric tonnes (MT) of moong, 97,970 MT of urad, and 41,718 MT of groundnut under the Minimum Support Price (MSP) mechanism. The total value of the approved procurement package exceeds ₹1,490 crore, providing substantial support to pulse and oilseed farmers across the state.

In Gujarat, the Centre has approved procurement of 18,250 MT of moong under the Price Support Scheme for the Summer 2026 season. The procurement, valued at more than ₹160 crore at Minimum Support Price, is expected to help farmers secure fair returns amid market fluctuations.

Tamil Nadu has also received enhanced procurement support. The Centre has increased the state’s moong procurement limit for the Rabi Marketing Season (RMS) 2025-26 from 885 MT to 990 MT, allowing an additional 105 MT of the pulse to be purchased under MSP operations. The approved procurement is valued at ₹8.68 crore and is expected to directly benefit growers in the state.

Meanwhile, Haryana has been granted approval for procurement of 2,115 MT of moong during the Summer 2026 season. The procurement, valued at more than ₹18 crore, is aimed at ensuring adequate price support for farmers and safeguarding them against adverse market conditions.

The Centre’s decision is being viewed as a significant intervention to strengthen the incomes of pulse and oilseed growers by ensuring effective implementation of the Minimum Support Price mechanism.
