The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has forecast heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds in five districts of Tamil Nadu on Saturday and predicted moderate rainfall across several parts of the state, Puducherry and Karaikal over the next week.
According to the weather department, an atmospheric trough extends from East Vidarbha to Tamil Nadu through Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, a system expected to enhance rainfall activity across the region in the coming days.
The RMC has issued a heavy rain warning for Nilgiris, Erode, Salem, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts on Saturday. These areas are likely to receive intense showers accompanied by gusty winds.
Moderate rainfall with strong winds is also expected at isolated places in the Western Ghats districts, the Cauvery delta region and parts of north Tamil Nadu. Residents in vulnerable areas, particularly those prone to waterlogging and landslides, have been advised to remain cautious.
The weather department said rainfall activity is likely to continue through the weekend. Heavy rain has also been forecast for the hilly regions of Tirunelveli district and in Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Dindigul, Theni and Kanniyakumari districts, where favourable atmospheric conditions are expected to enhance precipitation.
In Chennai, the sky is expected to remain generally cloudy, with the possibility of light to moderate rain in a few areas. No major weather-related disruptions are anticipated in the city, although intermittent showers may provide relief from humid conditions.
Meteorologists said the prevailing weather pattern is part of a broader monsoon system affecting southern India. The atmospheric trough and associated moisture incursion are expected to sustain rainfall activity over Tamil Nadu for several days.
Temperatures across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal are likely to remain near normal during the coming week. The weather department has not forecast any significant rise in daytime temperatures, with cloud cover and periodic rainfall expected to keep conditions relatively comfortable across most regions.
Authorities are monitoring the situation and have urged the public to follow official weather advisories and updates issued by the meteorological department.
