India squandered a late lead as reigning world champions Germany scored twice in the final four minutes to secure a 2-1 victory in the FIH Hockey Pro League on Thursday.
Jugraj Singh marked his 100th international appearance by giving India the lead in the 38th minute, converting a penalty corner with a powerful drag-flick after the visitors had dominated possession for much of the contest.
India started brightly and kept Germany under pressure with an aggressive press and disciplined defending, limiting the world champions to few clear chances. Abhishek came closest to breaking the deadlock in the first half but failed to convert after a well-worked move.
The breakthrough came in the third quarter when Jugraj fired home India’s first penalty corner of the match. Goalkeeper Mohith HS then produced a series of key saves to preserve India’s advantage as Germany pushed for an equaliser.
India had chances to extend their lead in the final quarter but were made to pay for missed opportunities. Justus Weigand levelled the scores in the 56th minute by converting a penalty corner before Jakob Brilla struck from another set-piece with seconds remaining to complete Germany’s comeback.
The defeat was a disappointing outcome for India after a strong performance against the world champions. They next face the Netherlands on June 21.
