The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) rescued six fishermen from a distressed Indian Fishing Boat (IFB) Manju Matha in a challenging search and rescue operation off the coast of Mangaluru on Sunday amid adverse weather conditions.
According to the Ministry of Defence, ICG Ship Sachet received a VHF radio distress call at around 4 pm from the fishing boat, located about 33 nautical miles off the Suratkal coast, reporting severe flooding and hull damage caused by rough seas. The incident placed all six crew members in immediate danger.
Responding swiftly, the Coast Guard diverted ICGS Sachet to the location and carried out the rescue operation despite rough seas, strong winds and poor visibility.
The crew deployed remote-operated lifebuoys, specially designed for use in adverse sea conditions, to safely reach and recover the stranded fishermen. By 6 pm, all six crew members had been rescued safely.
The Coast Guard said ICGS Sachet is proceeding to New Mangalore to disembark the rescued fishermen safely.
The operation highlights the Indian Coast Guard’s role in maritime search and rescue operations and its commitment to safeguarding lives at sea. The ministry said the successful mission demonstrated the effective use of modern rescue equipment along with the professionalism and operational preparedness of Coast Guard personnel in handling challenging maritime emergencies.
