James Burrows, mentor to stars and master of sitcoms, dies at 85

Legendary television director James Burrows, whose work helped shape some of the most celebrated sitcoms in American television history, has passed away at the age of 85.

Following the news of his death, members of the iconic sitcom Friends paid emotional tributes, remembering Burrows as a mentor, father figure and creative force who had a profound impact on their lives and careers.

Matt LeBlanc shared photographs with Burrows and described him as a “true icon”, saying his influence would be deeply missed.

David Schwimmer paid tribute to the veteran director, recalling how Burrows brought out the best in actors and created an atmosphere that felt like family. He described Burrows as a mentor and father figure whose warmth, wisdom and generosity shaped generations of performers.

Lisa Kudrow also remembered the celebrated director by sharing a photograph with him on social media.

Burrows’ family confirmed his passing in a statement to People magazine, saying he died peacefully surrounded by his loved ones. The statement described him as one of television’s most influential and beloved directors, whose work brought joy to audiences around the world for more than five decades.

Burrows left behind an unparalleled legacy across several acclaimed sitcoms. He directed all episodes of Will & Grace and more than 230 episodes of Cheers, which he co-created with Glen and Les Charles.

He also directed 15 episodes of Friends, earning recognition for nurturing young talent and helping shape one of television’s most successful ensemble casts.

Over the course of his career, Burrows won 11 Emmy Awards, including consecutive directing awards for Taxi in 1980 and 1981. In 2015, he reached the milestone of directing his 1,000th sitcom episode, cementing his place as one of the most prolific and respected figures in television history.
