Keir Starmer to step down as UK Prime Minister, Labour leader; successor race begins

British Prime Minister and Labour Party leader Keir Starmer on Monday announced that he would step down, bringing an end to a turbulent period marked by growing discontent within his party and criticism of his government’s policies.

Speaking outside 10 Downing Street, Starmer said he would remain Prime Minister until the Labour Party elects a new leader in the coming weeks. “The question my party is asking now is whether I am best placed to lead us into the next general election. I have heard the answer of my parliamentary party to that question, and I accept that answer with good grace,” he said, adding that he had informed King Charles III of his decision.

Starmer, who led Labour to a landslide election victory in July 2024, defended his record in office and said his overriding goal had been to build a fairer Britain. He pointed to Labour’s revival under his leadership, saying the party had overcome internal divisions, rebuilt public trust on key issues such as the economy and national security, and returned to government after 14 years in opposition.

His resignation follows months of mounting pressure from within Labour, with critics questioning the direction of the government and its ability to retain public support. Political observers had increasingly viewed his position as untenable amid declining confidence among MPs.

Attention has now turned to who could succeed Starmer. Among the frontrunners is Andy Burnham, whose support within the parliamentary party has reportedly grown following Labour’s victory in the Makerfield by-election last week. The contest to choose Labour’s next leader is expected to begin shortly.
