PM Modi visits Seychelles National Botanical Garden, meets world’s oldest living land animal

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Seychelles President Patrick Herminie on Saturday visited the National Botanical Garden in Victoria as part of the Prime Minister’s ongoing three-day State Visit to the island nation.

During the visit, the two leaders planted a tree at the botanical garden, reaffirming their shared commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development.

Prime Minister Modi also interacted with the garden’s staff, who briefed the visiting delegation on the rich biodiversity, flora and fauna preserved at the historic site.

A key highlight of the visit was PM Modi’s interaction with Jonathan, the world’s oldest living land animal. The Prime Minister was seen feeding the 194-year-old giant tortoise, one of the botanical garden’s most iconic residents.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi arrived in Seychelles to attend the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the country’s National Day as the Guest of Honour. He was received at the airport by Seychelles President Patrick Herminie, senior ministers and other dignitaries in a special ceremonial welcome.

The Prime Minister was also welcomed by members of the Indian diaspora and cultural performers, including artists presenting a traditional dance from Kutch.

Sharing his appreciation on X, PM Modi said, “Amazing cultural connect! The welcome at the airport in Seychelles included a dance from Kutch. The manner in which our diaspora has preserved and celebrated culture from different parts of India is appreciable.”

The Prime Minister also thanked President Herminie and the Indian community for the warm reception, describing Seychelles as a valued maritime partner and a close friend in the Indian Ocean.

Before arriving at the botanical garden, PM Modi shared a photograph with President Herminie during their drive from the airport, saying he was looking forward to the engagements scheduled during the visit.

The three-day visit will include bilateral talks between the two leaders, participation in Seychelles’ Golden Jubilee National Day celebrations, an address by the Prime Minister to the National Assembly, and interactions with the Indian diaspora.
