President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday extended congratulations to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on becoming India’s longest continuously serving elected Prime Minister, describing the milestone as a reflection of the enduring trust and confidence placed in his leadership by the people of the country.
In a post on X, President Murmu said the achievement was a landmark moment in India’s democratic journey and highlighted PM Modi’s contributions to governance, economic development, and social transformation.
“Heartiest congratulations to Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji on the unique honour of serving as the longest continuously elected Prime Minister of the nation. This landmark occasion stands as a testament to the enduring trust and confidence reposed in your leadership by the people of India,” she said.
The President noted that PM Modi’s tenure had been distinguished by far-reaching advancements across governance, economic resilience, and social transformation. She said that a wide range of welfare initiatives had ensured more inclusive and equitable access to development benefits, reaching people at the grassroots and reflecting the principles of Antyodaya.
Among the various initiatives launched under the Prime Minister’s leadership, President Murmu said that the PM-JANMAN scheme and the Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan held a special place in her heart.
“Your inspiring journey continues to instil hope and renewed confidence in India’s strong democratic traditions. I pray for your good health and long life so that you continue to serve the nation, leading it towards the vision of Atmanirbhar and Viksit Bharat,” she added.
PM Modi achieved the milestone on Wednesday after completing 4,399 days in office as an elected Prime Minister, surpassing the record set by India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.
Nehru’s tenure from 1952 onward is considered for the comparison, as he headed the interim government between 1947 and 1952 before India’s first general elections were held.
While former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi served for more than 14 years in office, her tenure was not continuous. PM Modi, who first assumed office in 2014, secured successive mandates in 2019 and 2024, making him the longest continuously serving elected Prime Minister in India’s history.
The milestone comes as the Prime Minister completes 12 years at the helm of the Central government, a period marked by major welfare programmes, infrastructure expansion, economic reforms, and efforts aimed at achieving the vision of a self-reliant and developed India.
