Thousands join International Yoga Day celebrations across Africa as yoga’s popularity continues to grow

Thousands of people across Africa participated in celebrations marking the 12th International Day of Yoga (IDY) on Sunday, reflecting the growing popularity of the ancient Indian practice across the continent.

In Kenya, more than 2,500 participants gathered at the Oshwal Centre Grounds in Nairobi to celebrate the occasion under the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing”. The event was attended by the Under-Secretary-General and Director-General of the United Nations Office at Nairobi, along with members of the diplomatic corps, Kenyan government officials, business leaders, the Indian diaspora and yoga enthusiasts from across the country.

According to the High Commission of India in Nairobi, the celebrations featured Rhythmic Yoga and Stick Yoga performances before participants joined the Common Yoga Protocol session. Ayurveda stalls were also set up at the venue, providing visitors with insights into India’s traditional system of medicine and its holistic approach to health and well-being.

“The large participation reflected the growing popularity of yoga in Kenya and the enduring bonds of friendship between India and Kenya,” the High Commission said in a post on X.

In Tanzania, more than 2,500 yoga enthusiasts gathered in Dar es Salaam for celebrations organised by the High Commission of India. The event was attended by Deputy Minister of Minerals Steven Kiruswa, ambassadors, high commissioners and heads of international organisations based in the city.

Meanwhile, in Ethiopia, the Embassy of India in Addis Ababa, in collaboration with local yoga instructors, organised a yoga session that brought together more than 300 participants.

Earlier in the day, António Guterres highlighted the universal appeal of yoga in a message shared on X.

“From its deep roots in ancient India, yoga has become truly universal, helping millions of people of all faiths and cultures find calm, build strength and live with purpose,” Guterres said. He added that yoga teaches mindfulness, respect and care for oneself, the planet and one another, while calling for greater support for older generations in line with this year’s theme.
