V-P Radhakrishnan, PM Modi extend greetings on World Environment Day

Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday extended greetings on World Environment Day and highlighted India’s achievements in environmental conservation, biodiversity protection, and sustainable development, reaffirming the country’s commitment to building a greener future.

V-P Radhakrishnan underscored the importance of environmental conservation, drawing inspiration from India’s civilisational heritage.

Quoting the ancient Tamil text Thirukkural, he said India’s traditional wisdom has long advocated living in harmony with nature and protecting all living beings.

“On the occasion of World Environment Day, let us strengthen our commitment to environmental conservation, sustainable living, and the protection of biodiversity, and work together to build a greener, healthier, and more prosperous future for generations to come,” the Vice President said.

In a series of posts on X, PM Modi said India takes pride in its rich biological diversity and the efforts undertaken to protect wildlife and ecosystems across the country.

“We in India are very proud of our biological diversity. Our diverse ecosystems support countless species and livelihoods,” the Prime Minister said, noting that conservation initiatives for species such as the Great Indian Bustard, snow leopard, sloth bear and cheetah have demonstrated how sustained commitment can help restore wildlife populations and ecosystems.

PM Modi also highlighted the success of the government’s environmental initiatives, including the nationwide “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign, which has contributed to the addition of nearly 1.19 lakh hectares of forest cover annually.

PM Modi said World Environment Day serves as an opportunity to reaffirm collective commitment towards environmental protection and sustainable growth.

“Numerous efforts by our Government over the last decade highlight our work in this direction. Some of India’s key successes include expanding green cover and a rise in the population of several animals,” he said.

The Prime Minister credited citizens for contributing to environmental progress through collective action, science-based policies and innovation.

Guided by the principle of “One Earth, One Family and One Future,” PM Modi said India will continue working towards a cleaner, greener and more sustainable planet through the spirit of Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment).

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also greeted citizens on World Environment Day and highlighted the government’s efforts in promoting environmental sustainability.

HM Shah said India has emerged as a global leader in renewable energy under the leadership of PM Modi, citing initiatives such as the National Green Hydrogen Mission and the rapid expansion of solar power generation.

“Today, India leads the world as one of the top three nations in annual forest cover growth,” he said.

The Home Minister emphasized that environmental protection is a collective responsibility and praised the efforts of the Central Armed Police Forces, which have planted over 7.5 crore saplings during the past six years and nurtured them to maturity.

“We are committed to building a greener, safer and healthier India,” Shah said.

World Environment Day is observed annually on June 5 to encourage global awareness and action for environmental protection, sustainability and biodiversity conservation.
