A commanding all-round performance led by Smriti Mandhana, Shafali Verma and Sree Charani powered India to a resounding 95-run victory over the Netherlands in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup at Headingley on Wednesday, lifting the defending ODI World Cup champions to the top of Group A.
India produced their highest-ever total in Women’s T20 World Cup history before a ruthless bowling display bundled out the Netherlands for 114 in 17.3 overs, securing their second win of the tournament and improving their net run rate to 3.98, narrowly ahead of Australia.
The victory was built on a dominant opening partnership between Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma, who punished loose bowling to lay the foundation for India’s imposing total of 209 for five. The pair added 115 runs for the opening wicket, one of India’s most significant partnerships in Women’s T20 World Cup history, before the bowlers completed the job with clinical precision.
Asked to bat first under overcast skies, India made an aggressive start as Shafali and Smriti immediately took control against an inexperienced Dutch attack. The opening duo found boundaries with remarkable consistency, exploiting wayward lines and poor discipline from the Netherlands bowlers.
Shafali was particularly aggressive during the powerplay, cutting, pulling and driving with authority as India raced to 50 in just 5.1 overs, equalling their fastest team fifty in Women’s T20 World Cup history. The Netherlands’ problems were compounded in the final over of the powerplay when debutant Myrthe van den Raad bowled six wides, helping India finish the first six overs at a tournament-best 59 without loss.
The momentum continued through the middle overs. Shafali brought up her maiden Women’s T20 World Cup half-century in just 34 balls, reaching the milestone with ten boundaries. The explosive opener eventually departed for 55 from 38 deliveries after Heather Siegers broke the 115-run partnership, but by then India had already seized complete control of the contest.
The century stand between Smriti and Shafali was their fifth in Women’s T20 Internationals and India’s fourth hundred-plus partnership in Women’s T20 World Cup history.
While Shafali provided the early fireworks, Smriti anchored the innings with a masterclass in strokeplay and placement. The left-hander registered her second consecutive half-century of the tournament, reaching the landmark in 36 balls before accelerating further in the latter stages.
One of the highlights of her innings came in the 15th over when she struck four consecutive boundaries off Silver Siegers, displaying a range of elegant drives and powerful sweeps. Smriti eventually scored 74 off just 47 balls, an innings decorated with 11 boundaries and a six, before falling in the 16th over.
Jemimah Rodrigues contributed a brisk 19, but it was the finishing burst from Richa Ghosh, Harmanpreet Kaur and Deepti Sharma that propelled India beyond the 200-run mark for the first time in Women’s T20 World Cup history.
Richa remained unbeaten on 20 from just eight deliveries, while Harmanpreet added 12 from nine balls. Deepti produced a stunning cameo at the death, smashing a six and a four in her two-ball unbeaten knock of 10 as India plundered 19 runs from the final over to finish at 209 for five.
Caroline de Lange was the most successful Netherlands bowler with figures of 2 for 32.
Chasing a daunting target, the Netherlands showed brief resistance through Heather Siegers and Phebe Molkenboer, who added 34 runs for the opening wicket. Heather struck four boundaries in her quickfire 21 off 15 balls before Nandni Sharma provided India with the breakthrough.
The Dutch reached 50 in 7.2 overs and were still competing at 68 for two after ten overs. However, India’s spinners steadily tightened their grip on the contest.
Deepti Sharma removed Molkenboer for 15, while Shafali returned with the ball to dismiss Sterre Kalis. Netherlands captain Babette de Leede attempted to anchor the chase with a fighting 28, but her dismissal by Nandni triggered a dramatic collapse.
At 96 for four in the 14th over, the Netherlands appeared capable of extending the contest, but India unleashed a devastating bowling spell that ended any hopes of resistance. The Dutch side lost their remaining six wickets for just 18 runs as India’s spin attack ran through the lower order.
Sree Charani emerged as the chief destroyer, claiming four wickets for 19 runs. The left-arm spinner dismantled the middle and lower order, removing Robine Rijke, Frederique Overdijk, Myrthe van den Raad and Iris Zwilling during a sensational spell.
Shafali capped an outstanding all-round performance by taking three wickets for 20 runs, while Nandni Sharma chipped in with two for 22. Together, the trio accounted for nine Dutch wickets as India’s spin attack completely overwhelmed the opposition.
The Netherlands were eventually bowled out for 114 in 17.3 overs, handing India a comprehensive 95-run victory.
The only concern for India on an otherwise perfect evening was an injury to off-spin all-rounder Shreyanka Patil. She twisted her right ankle while fielding off her own bowling and had to be taken off the field on a stretcher, raising concerns ahead of India’s remaining group-stage fixtures.
Nevertheless, the result reinforced India’s credentials as one of the tournament favourites. The team not only posted its highest-ever Women’s T20 World Cup total but also produced a disciplined bowling performance to record one of its most convincing victories in the competition.
With four points and a superior net run rate, India now sit atop Group A, ahead of Australia, and have significantly strengthened their chances of reaching the knockout stages.
Brief Scores: India 209/5 in 20 overs (Smriti Mandhana 74, Shafali Verma 55, Richa Ghosh 20 not out; Caroline de Lange 2/32) beat Netherlands 114 all out in 17.3 overs (Babette de Leede 28, Heather Siegers 21; Sree Charani 4/19, Shafali Verma 3/20, Nandni Sharma 2/22) by 95 runs.
