PM Modi’s Indonesia visit yields 20 outcomes, including cooperation on BrahMos missile systems

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit to Indonesia saw announcement of 20 major outcomes, including agreements on defence, space, healthcare, agriculture, technology and critical minerals, as India and Indonesia agreed to further deepen their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

The outcomes comprise 14 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and agreements along with six major announcements spanning strategic, economic, technological and cultural cooperation.

During bilateral talks at the Istana Merdeka in Jakarta, PM Modi and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto reviewed the full spectrum of bilateral relations and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation across key sectors.

Addressing a joint press statement after the talks, PM Modi said India-Indonesia relations had entered a new phase of growth.

“In recent years, the relationship between India and Indonesia has acquired renewed energy, greater confidence, and deeper strategic depth. Our Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, established in 2018, is reaching new heights today. We are making significant strides across every domain of cooperation, including development, security, technology, culture, and education,” he said.

Expressing confidence in the future of bilateral ties, the Prime Minister said, “I am confident that today marks the beginning of a golden new chapter in the India–Indonesia partnership. This new chapter will have a profound and positive impact on the world of the twenty-first century and on humanity as a whole.”

Among the key defence outcomes was cooperation on the BrahMos missile system and an Air-to-Air Missile Cooperation Agreement. The two countries also agreed to enhance defence exchanges, disaster management cooperation and industrial collaboration.

“The growing trust between our two countries is strengthening our cooperation in defence, security, and the maritime domain. Today, we agreed to further enhance collaboration in defence exchanges, disaster management, and industrial cooperation,” PM Modi said.

The two sides also extended their maritime safety and security cooperation framework, while their Coast Guards agreed to work together to strengthen maritime safety and security in the Indian Ocean. Both countries also decided to deepen cooperation in the blue economy, port development and maritime trade.

Space cooperation received a major boost with the extension of the framework agreement on the peaceful exploration and use of outer space, alongside decisions to promote joint research, technology sharing and capacity building.

“Our cooperation in the space sector has been built on decades of trust and partnership. Building on this strong foundation, we have taken important decisions today to advance joint research, technology sharing, and capacity building in the space sector,” the Prime Minister said.

Technology and innovation emerged as another key pillar of the partnership. The two countries signed agreements on telecommunications technologies and services, research, technology and innovation, and cooperation in artificial intelligence and Digital Public Infrastructure.

“The twenty-first century is a technology-driven century. India and Indonesia are both nations powered by the energy of their youth. Our young people have a natural affinity for technology. Today, we concluded an important agreement to strengthen technology cooperation between our young people in areas such as artificial intelligence, telecommunications, and Digital Public Infrastructure. We also agreed to further deepen collaboration between the start-up ecosystems of our two countries,” PM Modi said.

The Prime Minister also announced that the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Bangalore would establish its overseas campus at Singhasari Special Economic Zone in Indonesia, which he said would benefit young people across the ASEAN region.

Healthcare cooperation was strengthened through an MoU between India’s Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) and Indonesia’s National Agency of Drug and Food Control (BPOM), as well as an implementation agreement on health workforce collaboration.

“Our cooperation in the health sector will make a significant contribution to ensuring quality healthcare services in both our countries. The agreement concluded today will facilitate greater access for the people of Indonesia to India’s high-quality and affordable medicines. We will also contribute to the capacity building of Indonesia’s doctors and healthcare professionals,” the Prime Minister said.

In agriculture, the two countries signed an MoU on cooperation in agriculture and allied sectors, while India announced the supply of 100 tonnes of high-quality DWR-162 wheat seeds to support Indonesia’s food security.

“The supply of wheat seeds developed in India will further strengthen Indonesia’s food security. In addition, we will share best practices with each other in sustainable farming and agri-technology,” PM Modi said.

The visit also resulted in agreements aimed at strengthening supply chains in critical minerals and steel, including an MoU on cooperation in minerals and steel supply chains, a strategic joint venture between the Steel Authority of India (SAIL) and PT Krakatau Steel to establish a stainless-steel slab manufacturing facility in Indonesia, and an agreement on the development of rare earth magnets.

“In today’s world, ‘supply chain resilience’ in technology has become critically important. We have also concluded an important agreement to strengthen supply chain resilience in the areas of critical minerals and steel. In addition, our companies are embarking on a new phase of partnership in stainless steel and rare earth magnets,” PM Modi said.

To strengthen democratic institutions, the Election Commission of India (ECI) and Indonesia’s General Elections Commission signed an MoU on electoral cooperation.

The two countries also signed agreements on disaster management, maritime safety and security, and research and innovation.

As part of the announcements made during the visit, India will assist in the conservation and restoration of the UNESCO-listed Prambanan Temple Complex in Yogyakarta.

“Tomorrow, I will have the privilege of joining President Prabowo in Yogyakarta to launch the conservation project for the Prambanan Temple. More than a thousand years old, the Prambanan Temple stands as a timeless symbol of the shared cultural heritage of India and Indonesia,” the Prime Minister said.

The two countries also announced the commemoration of the centenary of Rabindranath Tagore’s historic visit to Indonesia as the “Tagore–Dewantara Year of Cultural and Educational Diplomacy.”

Highlighting growing people-to-people ties, PM Modi announced that India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) would soon be integrated with Indonesia’s payment system.

“People-to-people ties are the greatest strength of our relationship. We are delighted that India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) will soon be integrated with Indonesia’s payment system. This will further enhance both the ease of doing business and the ease of travel between our two countries,” he said.

The visit also saw the announcement of Indonesia Open Network (ION), based on India’s Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) architecture, and the deployment of an Indonesian Liaison Officer at the Information Fusion Centre–Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR).

On regional issues, the Prime Minister reiterated India’s support for ASEAN Centrality and emphasised the importance of dialogue and diplomacy in addressing global challenges.

“In this period of global turbulence, India believes that the role of dialogue and diplomacy has become more important than ever before. On the issue of Palestine, we continue to support a Two-State Solution and the pursuit of lasting peace,” he said.

Concluding his remarks, PM Modi said the partnership between the two countries was entering a transformative phase.

“A golden era is now at the threshold for our two nations. Our history is rooted in a shared cultural heritage, our present is anchored in mutual trust, and our future is defined by shared prosperity. I am confident that, together, we will realize the vision of Indonesia ‘Emas’ and our resolve to build a ‘Viksit Bharat’,” he said.
