Heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning lashed several parts of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday, prompting district administrations to issue safety advisories.
In Ramban district, intense rainfall and lightning were reported in several areas. As a precautionary measure, the district administration issued an alert, advising residents, particularly those living in upper reaches and near rivers, streams and other water bodies, to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel during the inclement weather.
Rain also lashed several parts of neighbouring Udhampur district, bringing down temperatures and leaving roads and other areas wet.
According to meteorological data, widespread rainfall and overcast conditions led to a noticeable dip in temperatures across both the Jammu and Kashmir divisions, accompanied by high humidity levels.
Srinagar recorded a temperature of 16.2 degrees Celsius, with humidity at 100 per cent, while Jammu recorded 22.4 degrees Celsius with 98 per cent humidity.
Among other major stations, the tourist resort of Gulmarg recorded the lowest temperature in the region at 10.6 degrees Celsius, while Pahalgam recorded 14.2 degrees Celsius with 96 per cent humidity.
In the Jammu division, Katra recorded 20.8 degrees Celsius with 95 per cent humidity, Banihal 17.4 degrees Celsius with 93 per cent humidity, while Kupwara recorded 17 degrees Celsius under cloudy skies.
According to the five-day forecast issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), rainfall activity is expected to gradually taper off, with scattered light showers likely over parts of southern and eastern districts, including Ramban, Udhampur, Doda, Kishtwar and Anantnag.
However, the weather department has cautioned about the possibility of thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds reaching up to 60 kmph at isolated places. The risk of localised flash floods, landslides and mudslides is also expected to persist in vulnerable hilly areas over the next five days.
Meanwhile, very heavy rainfall was recorded over Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, East Uttar Pradesh, West Uttar Pradesh and East Madhya Pradesh on Saturday, according to IMD data.
Heavy rainfall was also reported over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Assam and Meghalaya, Himachal Pradesh, West Madhya Pradesh and Odisha.
