Mansukh Mandaviya to lead Fit India Cyclothon along Mumbai’s Worli seafront on June 17

Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports and Labour and Employment Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya will lead a special edition of the Fit India Cyclothon along Mumbai’s iconic Worli Coastal Cycle Track on Wednesday, as part of the nationwide celebrations leading to the 12th International Day of Yoga on June 21.

Organised by the Sports Authority of India (SAI), Regional Centre Mumbai, the event titled “Cycling by the Sea” is expected to bring together around 250 cyclists from diverse backgrounds who will ride alongside the Union Minister against the backdrop of Mumbai’s scenic coastline.

The cyclothon, scheduled to begin early Wednesday morning, forms part of the Government’s broader Fit India Movement, which promotes fitness, wellness, and healthy living through community participation in physical activities such as cycling, yoga, and sports.

The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports said the event aims to reinforce the message that physical fitness and mental well-being are closely interconnected and are essential components of a healthy society.

Fitness and Wellness in Focus

The Mumbai cyclothon comes just days before International Yoga Day and is being positioned as a curtain-raiser to the global celebrations of the annual event.

With the Arabian Sea on one side and hundreds of cyclists riding together on the other, the event is expected to symbolize the core objectives of the Fit India Movement – encouraging healthier lifestyles, promoting environmental sustainability, and fostering a stronger sporting culture across the country.

The initiative also highlights the growing emphasis on integrating fitness into daily life as India pursues its vision of becoming a global sporting powerhouse.

Cycling Movement Gains Momentum

Mandaviya has been one of the leading advocates of cycling as a means of improving personal health while also contributing to environmental conservation.

Since the launch of the Fit India Sundays on Cycle initiative in December 2024, the programme has witnessed significant public participation across the country.

According to official figures, the campaign has impacted more than 30 lakh people through activities conducted at over three lakh locations nationwide.

The initiative is being implemented by the Ministry in collaboration with several partner organisations, including the Cycling Federation of India (CFI), Yogasana Bharat, Raahgiri Foundation, and MY Bharat.

The Ministry said the programme has helped create greater awareness about the benefits of cycling as a low-cost, accessible, and sustainable form of exercise.

Link Between Cycling and Yoga

The Government views both cycling and yoga as complementary tools for promoting holistic health and preventive healthcare.

As countries around the world prepare to observe the 12th International Day of Yoga, initiatives such as the Fit India Cyclothon seek to reinforce the broader message of wellness through regular physical activity, healthy habits, and community engagement.

Over the past decade, International Yoga Day has evolved into one of the world’s largest wellness movements, with participation spanning more than 180 countries. India has played a central role in promoting yoga as a means of achieving physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

The Ministry noted that programmes such as Fit India Sundays on Cycle and Yoga Day celebrations reflect India’s commitment to encouraging healthier, more active, and sustainable lifestyles, both domestically and globally.
