BNP’s nationwide hartal underway amid violent incidents in Bangladesh

In Bangladesh, a countrywide dawn-to-dusk hartal called by the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) protesting alleged attack on its Saturday’s grand rally in dhaka underway on Sunday.

A bus assistant burned to death after the Asim Paribahan bus was set on fire by miscreants in Dhaka’s Demra area early on Sunday . At least three vehicles were set on fire in Dhaka as a hartal called by BNP and banned political party Jamaat-e-Islami is underway today.

Meanwhile, the Detective Branch (DB) of Police detained BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir from his Gulshan residence on Sunday morning. Fakhrul announced the shutdown after suspending yesterday’s rally abruptly following violent clashes between law enforcers and opposition activists that killed at least two people, including a police constable and injured several hundred others.

The images and videos on social media from various points of the capital including, Airport, Banani, Mohakhali, Sangsad Bhaban and Moghbazar areas showed almost deserted streets amidst the ongoing hartal, reports UNB.

A large number of law enforcers from Police, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) were deployed at multiple important points across Dhaka to tackle any untoward incident.

Meanwhile, activists of the ruling Awami League and its associate bodies including Jubo League and Chhatra League were seen on the streets with party banners alongside the law enforcers.
