Alphabet, the parent company of Google, has officially launched its highly anticipated artificial intelligence model, named Gemini. This cutting-edge technology marks a significant leap forward in the realm of AI, boasting the capability to analyze diverse forms of information, including video, audio, and text.
Gemini represents a major stride in AI sophistication, showcasing advanced reasoning and a nuanced understanding of information, surpassing Google’s previous technologies, according to a statement from the company. Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet, emphasized the magnitude of this achievement in a blog post, describing it as “one of the biggest science and engineering efforts we’ve undertaken as a company.”
In the race to rival OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which was launched approximately a year ago, Google has been striving to develop AI software that can match the innovations introduced by the Microsoft-backed company.
A noteworthy aspect of this announcement is the integration of a segment of Gemini’s technology into Google’s AI assistant Bard. The company plans to unveil the most advanced version of Gemini through Bard in the early months of the upcoming year.
Alphabet has disclosed that it will offer three versions of the Gemini model, each optimized for different processing power requirements. The most powerful iteration is designed for data centers, while the smallest is tailored to run efficiently on mobile devices.
In tandem with the Gemini model, Alphabet also revealed the introduction of a new generation of its proprietary AI chips, known as tensor processing units (TPUs). The Cloud TPU v5p, designed for training large AI models, is composed of pods featuring 8,960 chips. This latest iteration of custom processors boasts a remarkable improvement, enabling the training of large language models nearly three times faster than previous generations. As of Wednesday, developers can access the new chips in a “preview” phase.
Alphabet’s unveiling of the Gemini AI model and the accompanying advancements in AI chip technology underscores the company’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of artificial intelligence, promising a new era of more sophisticated and efficient AI applications.
