Muharram is being observed across Bangladesh with due religious solemnity

The holy Ashura, commemorating the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hossain Ibn Ali, a grandson of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad, is being observed today across Bangladesh with due religious solemnity.

On this day in the Hijri year of 61, Hazrat Imam, along with his family members and 72 followers embraced the martyrdom in the hands of Yazid’s soldiers at the desert of Karbala to uphold the teachings of the Prophet.

The holy Ashura also known as Muharram is regarded as the day of Karbala, a ‘mourning and heartbreaking event’, which has special religious significance for the Muslim community across the globe.

Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahbuddin and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages on the eve of Ashura, paying deep respect to Hazrat Imam Hossain (RA) and other martyrs of Karbala.The day is a public holiday in Bangladesh.

Shia community members will bring out a Tajia procession in Dhaka on the day. The Tajia procession will start from Imambara Husaini Dallan in Old Dhaka. However, police have banned carrying lethal weapons like metal weapons, knives, swords and other sharp weapons during the Tajia procession.
