The Assembly elections for the 90 constituencies in Haryana will be conducted in a single phase on October 1, with the counting of votes scheduled for October 4, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar announced on Friday.
Haryana has a total of 2.01 crore registered voters, including 1.06 crore males, 0.95 crore females, 4.52 lakh first-time voters, and 40.95 lakh young voters. Of the 90 assembly constituencies, 73 are General, 17 are reserved for Scheduled Castes (SC), and none for Scheduled Tribes (ST). The updated electoral roll for Haryana will be published on August 27.
The last date to file nominations is September 12, with scrutiny set for September 13. Candidates can withdraw their nominations until September 16.
Following the announcement, BJP leader Anil Vij expressed readiness for the polls, saying, “It is a good thing that elections in Haryana will be held on October 1. Our party and workers are ready to contest the elections.”
Former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said that the Congress is prepared for the elections. “Congress is ready, and people from all sections have decided to bring Congress to power,” Hooda said. Haryana Congress chief Udai Bhan added, “We welcome the announcement, and Congress is ready. Congress will form the government with a two-thirds majority.”
Haryana is expected to witness a four-way contest in the 2024 elections between the BJP, Congress, JJP, and AAP.
Following the 2019 elections, the BJP, which secured 40 seats, formed a coalition government with the JJP, which won 10 seats. The Congress secured victory in 31 seats. The BJP-JJP alliance dissolved earlier this year.
