Sensex and Nifty close higher, boosted by IT stocks

India’s benchmark indices ended Monday on a positive note, buoyed by gains in IT, FMCG, and banking stocks. Investors remained optimistic about a potential rate cut by the U.S. Federal Reserve.

The Sensex rose 194.07 points, or 0.24 percent, to settle at 82,559.84, while the Nifty added 42.80 points, or 0.17 percent, to close at 25,278.70. Market breadth was negative, with 1,684 shares advancing and 2,191 shares declining, while 133 shares remained unchanged.

Top performers on the Nifty included Bajaj Finserv, Bajaj Finance, HCL Technologies, Bajaj Auto, and Hero MotoCorp. Grasim Industries, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Adani Enterprises, Coal India, and Nestle India were major laggards.

Sectoral performance was mixed, with banking, FMCG, and IT indices showing strength. Capital goods, metals, healthcare, telecom, and media sectors witnessed declines, ranging from 0.4 percent to 1.6 percent.

The BSE midcap index remained flat, while the smallcap index fell by 0.5 percent.
