Sensex, Nifty close lower as global markets stumble

India’s benchmark indices fell on Wednesday, as concerns over a potential slowdown in the U.S. triggered declines in global equities and shares of IT companies.

The Sensex dropped 202.80 points, or 0.25%, to settle at 82,352.64, while the Nifty fell 81.10 points, or 0.32%, to close at 25,198.70.

Market breadth was negative, with 1,935 shares declining, 1,852 shares advancing, and 90 shares remaining unchanged.

Top gainers on the Nifty included Asian Paints, Grasim Industries, Hindustan Unilever (HUL), Apollo Hospitals, and Sun Pharma. Shares of Wipro, Coal India, ONGC, Hindalco Industries, and Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) saw the biggest declines.

Sectoral performance was mixed. The FMCG, realty, and pharma sectors each gained 0.5%, while the auto, banking, energy, IT, and metals sectors saw declines ranging from 0.4% to 1%. The BSE Midcap index ended slightly lower, while the Smallcap index managed to close in positive territory.
