Srinagar | Jammu and Kashmir Police | grenade attack

Jammu and Kashmir Police announced the arrest of terrorists and their associates linked to a recent grenade attack in Srinagar’s bustling Sunday market. The incident, which took place on November 3, left twelve people injured, including two civilians with serious injuries.

The grenade attack, reportedly orchestrated on orders from handlers in Pakistan, aimed to disrupt peace and create fear among Srinagar’s residents. At a press conference on Friday, Kashmir Inspector-General of Police VK Birdi confirmed the arrests, identifying the suspects as Osama Yasin Sheikh, Umar Fayaz Sheikh, and Afnan Mansoor Sheikh.

“They threw the grenade with the intention of disrupting peace and normalcy here. This attack was carried out following instructions from their handlers in Pakistan,” said IGP Birdi.

The injured include a woman with young children, highlighting the indiscriminate nature of the attack, which took place near the Tourist Reception Centre in Srinagar. Those detained have been charged under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah strongly condemned the attack. In a statement on social media, he emphasized that there is “no justification for targeting innocent civilians” and urged the security forces to swiftly bring an end to the recent spate of violence across the region.

“The last few days have seen multiple attacks and encounters across the valley. The news of a grenade attack on innocent shoppers at the Sunday market in Srinagar is deeply disturbing,” Abdullah said, calling for enhanced security efforts to restore a sense of safety and normalcy for residents.
