India’s D. Gukesh etched his name in history by dethroning China’s Ding Liren to claim the 2024 World Chess Championship on Thursday, becoming the sport’s youngest-ever titleholder at just 18 years old.
The final match took a dramatic turn in the 14th round when Ding’s miscalculation on the 55th move handed victory to Gukesh in a position poised for a draw.
Despite losing the first game, the Indian maestro staged an impressive recovery, equalising the score in the third round. He seized momentum in the 11th but saw it slip momentarily as Ding countered in the 12th.
Gukesh qualified for the World Championship after winning the Candidates tournament earlier this year.
