PM Modi pays tribute to C. Rajagopalachari on his birth anniversary

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday paid homage to freedom fighter C. Rajagopalachari on his birth anniversary, reflecting on his contributions to India’s independence and progress.

In a post on X, PM Modi said: “Remembering Shri C. Rajagopalachari on his birth anniversary. He is remembered for his rich contribution to India’s freedom struggle and efforts to further India’s progress. He was a multifaceted persona, leaving a strong impact on governance, literature and social empowerment. Rajaji’s principles motivate us to ensure every Indian leads a life of dignity and prosperity.”

Born on December 10, 1878, in Torali village, C. Rajagopalachari was a key figure in India’s freedom movement and a prominent political leader. A lawyer by profession, he began his public service in 1917 as the chairperson of Salem Municipality. Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, he left law to join the Non-Cooperation and Civil Disobedience movements.

Rajagopalachari later became the last Governor-General of India and briefly served as the chief minister of Tamil Nadu. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1954 in recognition of his immense contributions. He also founded the Swatantra Party, which championed center-right ideologies.

A prolific writer, Rajagopalachari is widely respected for his English translations of the Mahabharata and Ramayana, as well as his contributions to Tamil literature. He passed away on December 25, 1972.
