The long-anticipated Riyadh Metro system officially began operations, marking a milestone in Saudi Arabia’s urban development. Indian engineering giant Larsen & Toubro (L&T) played a significant role in the construction of portions of this ambitious project, highlighting the international collaboration involved in bringing this vision to reality.
India’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Dr. Suhel Ajaz Khan, along with Embassy officials, conducted a comprehensive tour of the newly opened metro system, including visits to several key stations. The centerpiece of the network is the KAFD (King Abdullah Financial District) Station, which serves as a major interchange hub connecting three different metro lines.
The station’s impressive architecture and scale make it the largest in the network, demonstrating Saudi Arabia’s commitment to world-class infrastructure. The fully automated, driverless metro system showcases cutting-edge technology while incorporating distinctive elements of local Saudi culture in its station designs.
The launch of the Riyadh Metro represents a crucial step in the kingdom’s broader urban development plans, promising to transform the way millions of residents navigate the city while reducing traffic congestion and promoting sustainable transportation options.
