The Indian Railways is making remarkable strides towards transforming itself into a future-ready organization, aiming to offer safer, faster, and world-class travel experiences for millions of passengers across India.
By the end of the first nine months and four days of the current fiscal year, the Railways has already spent 76% of its budgetary outlay, demonstrating a strong commitment to capacity augmentation and modernization, the Railway Ministry said in a press release on Wednesday.
The budgetary provision for rolling stock was Rs 50,903 crore, of which Rs 40,367 crore had been spent by January 5. This expenditure accounts for 79 percent of the budget allocated for rolling stock.
According to the Ministry, the results of consistent capital expenditure (Capex) over the past decade are evident in the introduction of 136 Vande Bharat trains, nearly 97 percent electrification of broad gauge lines, the construction of new tracks, gauge conversion, track doubling, improvements in traffic facilities, and investments in PSUs and metropolitan transport systems..
Other investments include nearly 97% electrification of broad gauge lines, new railway lines, track doubling, and technological improvements. These efforts have collectively resulted in faster, safer, and more affordable rail services for billions of Indians.
The Railways’ success in maintaining a high level of capital expenditure is evident in the spending of Rs. 1,198 crores in just the first four days of January 2025, bringing total expenditure to Rs. 1,92,446 crores, the Ministry said.
Safety-related works have also received significant attention, with 82% of the allocated Rs. 34,412 crores already spent, showing a focus on securing the safety of passengers.
With a budget estimate of Rs. 2,65,200 crores for the fiscal year, Indian Railways is positioning itself to meet the demands of a geographically and culturally diverse population.
This massive infrastructure overhaul, supported by the government’s commitment to “Viksit Bharat,” is paving the way for a more connected, sustainable, and modern India.
