Madhya Pradesh: PM Modi announces Rs 2 lakh ex-gratia for families of 12 victims in Mandsaur accident

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each for the families of the 12 people who lost their lives in a tragic accident in Madhya Pradesh’s Mandsaur district on Sunday.
 
“Saddened by the loss of lives in an accident in Mandsaur, Madhya Pradesh. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon. An ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be given Rs 50,000: PM,” the PMO’s said in a post on X. 
 
According to police, the accident occurred when a speeding van collided with a motorcycle before plunging into a well, resulting in the deaths of 12 people, including a biker and a rescuer.
 
Earlier, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav also expressed grief over the incident. He announced financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh each for the families of the deceased, Rs 1 lakh for those seriously injured, and Rs 50,000 for those with minor injuries from the Chief Minister’s discretionary fund.
 
In a post on X, CM Yadav said, “Sad news has been received about the untimely death of twelve people due to a car falling into a deep well in a horrific road accident in the Narayangarh police station area of Mandsaur district.”
He added that the local administration carried out rescue operations and admitted the injured to the nearest hospital.
 
“I pray to Baba Mahakal to grant peace to the souls. In this hour of grief, I pray that the family members find the strength to bear this immense loss. I also pray for the speedy recovery of the injured,” Yadav added.
 
Mandsaur Superintendent of Police (SP) Abhishek Anand, speaking to ANI, said, “In an incident in the Narayangarh Police Station area, a van fell into a well. There were a total of 14 people in the van. A person who went to assist in the rescue also lost his life. The van had first hit a motorcycle, and the rider also died.”
 
SP Anand informed that four people were successfully rescued, but 12 people, including the rescuer, lost their lives. Eleven bodies were recovered from the well, and one from the road.
 
“All the bodies have been recovered and sent for post-mortem examinations, some of which have already been completed. Legal proceedings are underway,” he added.
 
In a courageous rescue attempt, a local villager named Manohar descended into the well and saved six people, including two children. However, he tragically lost his life in the process. His body has also been recovered.
 
“This is an extremely heart-wrenching incident, and we express our deepest sympathies to the affected families. All necessary legal actions are being carried out,” SP Anand said.
