Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has announced plans to establish the Dubai Museum of Modern Art (DUMA), a major new cultural landmark designed by renowned Japanese architect Tadao Ando.
The proposed museum will be located on Dubai Creek and is envisioned as a five-story circular structure inspired by the sea and the pearl, symbols deeply rooted in Dubai’s heritage. The design features a curved shell enclosing a central exhibition hall, with a cylindrical opening to allow natural light to illuminate the interior, evoking the glow of a pearl in the Arabian Gulf.
Sheikh Mohammed said the project reflects Dubai’s commitment to fostering culture and creativity. “Culture and art are the soul of a city and a lens through which its progress is seen,” he said. “They reflect its vision and the depth of its humanitarian mission. The Dubai Museum of Art will be a new beacon for the city, enhancing its arts scene and strengthening its global status.”
DUMA will showcase modern and contemporary artworks from both emerging and established artists. Plans include adaptable exhibition galleries, a restaurant, and a VIP lounge, along with artist talks, panel discussions, educational programmes, and art fairs. The project forms part of the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority’s wider initiative to expand public art and cultural engagement across the emirate.
