Ashwini Vaishnaw inspects India’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper Train at New Delhi Railway Station

Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw on Saturday inspected India’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper Train at New Delhi Railway Station, marking a key step towards the launch of the country’s first semi-high-speed overnight Vande Bharat service.

During the inspection, the Minister reviewed sleeper coaches, seating and berthing arrangements, modern interiors, safety systems and passenger convenience features. Emphasising passenger safety and comfort, he examined advanced facilities including automatic doors, the indigenous KAVACH train protection system, enhanced fire safety mechanisms, disinfectant technology and CCTV surveillance across all coaches. Special attention has also been given to innovative toilet designs aimed at improving hygiene and preventing water splashes.

Railway officials briefed the Minister on the technical preparedness of the train, informing him that the entire cycle of trials, testing and certification has been successfully completed. The Minister noted that the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train is fully ready for operations.

The first Vande Bharat Sleeper Train will run between Guwahati in Assam and Howrah in West Bengal, representing a significant transformation in long-distance overnight rail travel in India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to flag off the inaugural service later this month.

Configured with 16 coaches, the train comprises 11 AC three-tier coaches, four AC two-tier coaches and one AC first-class coach, with a total capacity of around 823 passengers. Designed for superior ride comfort, it features advanced suspension systems, ergonomic interiors and high sanitation standards.

Adding a regional touch to the travel experience, the train will offer region-specific culinary options, with authentic Assamese cuisine served on services originating from Guwahati and traditional Bengali delicacies on journeys starting from Kolkata.

With a design speed of up to 180 kmph, the semi-high-speed Vande Bharat Sleeper Train combines faster travel with modern amenities, underscoring Indian Railways’ focus on passenger-centric services, safety and technological innovation.
