PM Modi to launch wide range of development projects in Varanasi, inaugurate Ganga Expressway during UP visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Uttar Pradesh on April 28–29, where he will launch and lay the foundation for a wide range of development projects while also participating in key public events across Varanasi and Hardoi.

On April 28, the Prime Minister will attend a Mahila Sammelan in Varanasi, where he will inaugurate projects worth ₹6,350. These initiatives span sectors such as railways, road infrastructure, water supply, healthcare, tourism, and urban development.

Over 48 completed projects valued at more than ₹1,050 crore will be dedicated to the nation, including the widening of the Varanasi–Azamgarh road, new rail over bridges, and a 55 MLD sewage treatment plant in Bhagwanpur. Community-focused developments include rural drinking water schemes under the Jal Jeevan Mission, redevelopment of Chandrawati Ghat, tourism upgrades near Sarnath, and improvements to Sant Ravidas Park. Facilities such as a synthetic hockey turf, a 100-bed old age home, and a 1 MW solar power plant will also be unveiled.

The Prime Minister will also lay the foundation stone for over 112 projects worth approximately ₹5,300 crore. These include sewerage and water supply schemes under AMRUT 2.0, a 500-bed multi-super-specialty hospital at Shri Shiv Prasad Gupta Divisional District Hospital, redevelopment of healthcare facilities, construction of commercial complexes, and enhanced tourism infrastructure at major ghats like Assi and Dashashwamedh.

Additionally, infrastructure for governance and social welfare, including an integrated divisional office and a child shelter home, will be initiated. A bonus exceeding ₹105 crore will also be transferred to milk suppliers associated with Banas Dairy.

Rail connectivity will receive a major boost with the foundation of a third and fourth railway line between Varanasi Junction and Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction, including a rail-cum-road bridge over the Ganga. The Prime Minister will also flag off two new Amrit Bharat Express trains connecting Banaras to Pune (Hadapsar) and Ayodhya to Mumbai (Lokmanya Tilak Terminus), improving affordable long-distance travel and strengthening links between key religious and economic centres.

On April 29, Prime Minister Modi will begin his day with prayers at the Kashi Vishwanath Temple before heading to Hardoi to inaugurate the ambitious Ganga Expressway. Stretching 594 kilometres, this six-lane (expandable to eight lanes) access-controlled expressway has been built at an estimated cost of ₹36,230 crore. It connects 12 districts, including Meerut and Prayagraj, significantly reducing travel time between the two cities from 10–12 hours to around six hours.

A notable feature of the expressway is a 3.5-kilometre emergency landing strip in Shahjahanpur, designed to support both civilian and defence needs. The corridor is expected to emerge as a major economic driver, with integrated manufacturing and logistics hubs planned along its route. Improved connectivity is likely to benefit farmers by providing better access to markets, while also boosting tourism, generating employment, and strengthening the state’s overall economic landscape.

The Ganga Expressway will further integrate with other major road networks such as the Agra–Lucknow Expressway, forming a comprehensive high-speed connectivity grid across Uttar Pradesh. Together, these developments are aimed at enhancing logistics efficiency, attracting investment, and driving balanced regional growth across the state.
