Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday urged Members of Parliament to vote in favour of the amendment to the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, describing it as a “historic opportunity” to ensure rightful representation for women in legislative bodies.
Speaking ahead of the scheduled voting in the Lok Sabha, the Prime Minister noted that extensive discussions on the legislation had taken place, continuing late into the night and resuming in the morning session.
He said the government had addressed all concerns raised by members during the debate. “All apprehensions and misconceptions relating to the legislation have been answered with facts and logic, and any gaps in information have also been filled,” PM Modi said in a post on X.
‘Time to end decades of delay’
Highlighting the long-pending nature of the issue, the Prime Minister said the demand for women’s reservation had been debated for nearly four decades and could no longer be delayed.
“Now is the time to ensure that half of the nation’s population receives its rightful due in decision-making,” he said, adding that low representation of women in governance even after decades of Independence was not appropriate.
Appeal to MPs across parties
With voting imminent, PM Modi appealed to all political parties to take a “thoughtful and sensitive decision” and support the amendment.
“On behalf of our Nari Shakti, I request all members not to do anything that may hurt the sentiments of women across India. Crores of women are watching our intent and our decisions,” he said.
PM Modi also called on MPs to reflect personally before casting their vote. “Please reflect upon your conscience, remembering the women in your own families – mothers, sisters, daughters and wives,” he added.
‘Opportunity to strengthen democracy’
Describing the amendment as a major step towards gender equality, the Prime Minister said it would not only empower women but also strengthen India’s democratic framework.
“The legislation is a significant opportunity to do justice to women of our nation. Please do not deprive our Nari Shakti of new opportunities,” he said.
Expressing confidence in a positive outcome, PM Modi said that unanimous passage of the amendment would mark a defining moment in India’s democratic journey.
“Let us come together to create history and ensure that women, who form half of the country’s population, receive their rightful due,” he said.
