Indian Railways has approved a ₹200 crore project to strengthen its digital communication infrastructure by laying 48-fibre Optical Fibre Cable (OFC) across nearly 1,700 route kilometres of the South Eastern Railway network.
According to the Ministry of Railways, the project will provide 48-fibre OFC connectivity over 1,696.2 route kilometres (RKm) across the Adra, Chakradharpur, Kharagpur and Ranchi divisions, enhancing the communication network that supports safe and efficient railway operations.
The sanctioned works include 545.4 RKm in the Adra Division, 392.3 RKm in the Chakradharpur Division, 339.9 RKm in the Kharagpur Division, and 418.6 RKm in the Ranchi Division.
The ministry said the upgraded fibre optic backbone will provide a high-capacity and reliable communication network, enabling faster transmission of operational data and improving coordination between railway stations, control offices and field units.
The project is also expected to strengthen the digital infrastructure required for the deployment of modern railway technologies, enhance operational efficiency and support future capacity expansion across the South Eastern Railway network.
According to the ministry, the approval is part of Indian Railways’ ongoing efforts to modernise critical infrastructure through advanced communication systems, ensuring safer, smarter and more efficient train operations across the national network.
