PM Modi Meets Venezuela’s Acting President Delcy Rodriguez, Reviews Bilateral Cooperation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday held bilateral talks with Venezuela’s Acting President Delcy Rodriguez in New Delhi, with the two leaders reviewing the full spectrum of India-Venezuela relations and exploring avenues to deepen cooperation in key sectors.

The meeting took place at Hyderabad House as part of Rodriguez’s five-day working visit to India, which began on June 3. Discussions focused on areas including energy security, trade and investment, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, transportation and renewable energy.

Earlier in the day, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Rodriguez and reaffirmed India’s commitment to strengthening ties with the South American nation. In a post on X, Jaishankar said he deeply valued Rodriguez’s longstanding commitment to the India-Venezuela relationship and expressed confidence that her meeting with Prime Minister Modi would further strengthen bilateral cooperation.

Rodriguez arrived in New Delhi on Wednesday accompanied by a high-level delegation that includes Venezuela’s ministers responsible for foreign affairs, economy and finance, science and technology, communication and information, and transportation. The Ministry of External Affairs said the visit is expected to further deepen India-Venezuela ties and build on the momentum in the bilateral partnership.

According to the MEA, the two sides are reviewing cooperation across a wide range of sectors, with particular emphasis on energy, which remains a key pillar of the bilateral relationship. India has been increasing its engagement with Venezuela in the energy sector, while both countries are also exploring opportunities in trade, healthcare, pharmaceuticals and renewable energy.

The visit follows a telephone conversation between Prime Minister Modi and Rodriguez in January this year, during which the two leaders agreed to further expand and deepen the India-Venezuela partnership across multiple sectors and continue cooperation on issues of interest to the Global South.
