Residents of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) are likely to continue receiving relief from the summer heat, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds across the region until June 4.
The weather department has issued a yellow alert for Delhi on Tuesday, warning of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, light rainfall and strong winds, particularly during the night. Wind speeds are expected to reach 40-50 kmph in isolated areas. No colour-coded warnings have been issued for Wednesday and Thursday.
According to the IMD, the prevailing weather conditions are expected to keep maximum temperatures below the 40-degree Celsius mark at least until June 6, extending the respite from intense heat.
Delhi witnessed an unusually mild start to June, with the Safdarjung observatory, the city’s primary weather station, recording a maximum temperature of 36.3 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 24.9 degrees Celsius on June 1. The last time the city registered a lower maximum temperature on June 1 was in 2023, when the mercury settled at 32.7 degrees Celsius.
Meanwhile, the IMD said the southwest monsoon is likely to make its onset over Kerala within the next two to three days. Conditions have become favourable for its further advance over parts of the Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
The department also expects the monsoon to progress into additional areas of the Bay of Bengal, including the southwest, west-central, east-central and northeastern regions, during the same period. The southwest monsoon typically reaches Kerala around June 1 before gradually advancing across the country.
Apart from Delhi-NCR, the IMD has forecast thunderstorms, lightning, rainfall and gusty winds in several northern, eastern, central and southern states this week.
The expected rainfall is likely to provide relief from high temperatures and improve weather conditions across multiple regions of the country.
