United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer arrived in New Delhi on Tuesday for high-level discussions with Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, as India and the United States move closer to finalising an interim bilateral trade agreement.
Greer reached Vanijya Bhavan for meetings focused on the proposed interim trade deal and the broader Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) framework. He was accompanied by US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor and a trade delegation.
Ahead of the visit, Gor expressed optimism about the discussions. In a post on X, he said he looked forward to welcoming Greer to New Delhi for meetings with Goyal and other senior Indian officials.
The visit follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France, where bilateral issues, including trade cooperation, were discussed.
According to a statement from the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), the talks will focus on the India-US Joint Statement and an interim trade agreement as part of broader bilateral trade negotiations launched by President Trump and Prime Minister Modi on February 13, 2025.
India is also continuing discussions with the United States regarding proposed tariff measures under Section 301 proceedings while working towards a broader bilateral trade framework.
Last week, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said negotiations on the interim trade pact had reached the final stage. Briefing the media after the G7 Summit, he noted that both countries had made significant progress and described Greer’s visit as important for advancing the negotiations.
“With the United States, we have made significant progress already on the conclusion of an interim bilateral trade agreement,” Misri said. “We are in the final stages of concluding that agreement.”
Following his engagements in India, Greer is scheduled to travel to Uzbekistan, where he will meet President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, Head of the Presidential Administration Saida Mirziyoyeva, and Deputy Prime Minister Jamshid Khodjaev.
The USTR said Greer will use the meetings to discuss efforts to achieve fair, balanced and reciprocal trade relations with the United States.
